Avery Update
Avery Doninger was the cover of our third issue of Young Voices. We told you her story about how as a junior in a case of poor judgement and frustration, she called school administrators “douche bags” on her on-line blog. When the school found out, her punishment included apologizing, informing her mother about the unsavory comment and she was barred from running for class secretary during her senior year.
Her case has received national attention.
Lawyers for the Burlington school district told the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in early March 2008 that administrators should be allowed to act if such comments are made on the Web.
Doninger, now a senior and months from graduation, claims the school system violated her free speech rights.
She said in her interview with Young Voices, “Now it is about the application of the Bill of Rights, it is about protecting liberty at the local level.”
